Firefox 157 makes more room for reading and brings new suggestions to Spain

Compact mode reduces the space taken by toolbars. The 6 October patch fixes specific bugs, and suggestions remain adjustable.

The page can take up more space

Firefox 157 arrived on 29 September with redesigned toolbars and menus and a compact mode that reduces interface space. It also extended Firefox Suggest to Spain. The 157.0.1 patch followed on 6 October with fixes after that change.[1][2]

Compact mode’s purpose makes sense without a list of technical terms: with an article beside another window, you want buttons to leave room for text. A browser need not resemble an aircraft cockpit to let you read. Its usefulness depends on your screen layout; we have not measured improved speed or battery life.[1][2]

More options for the screen you already have

Mozilla presents compact mode as part of a visual change that also includes light and dark themes and ways to organise the new-tab page. These concern everyday use, from available space to appearance.[3]

Imagine reading a story while taking notes beside it. A denser interface may help keep both windows visible. If it feels uncomfortable, choosing it merely because it is new makes little sense: the useful question is whether you can find your tabs and read with fewer interruptions.[3]

In Spain, check what the address bar suggests

Firefox Suggest can bring together history, bookmarks and web recommendations, including some sponsored suggestions. Not everything appearing in the address bar has the same origin.[4]

The documentation directs you to Settings → Search → Firefox Suggest to enable or disable suggestion types. Checking it lets you decide what you want to see when typing. Finding a saved page and receiving a commercial link are different uses of the same space; the controls deserve as much attention as the new look.[4]

What the October update fixes

Version 157.0.1 fixed macOS downloads failing when asking for a location without permission to access Downloads. It also addressed a sidebar stuck on the bookmarks or chatbot panel and a missing backup-restore option during initial Windows setup.[2]

If you encountered one of those problems, this patch matters more concretely than a new theme. These are conditional failures, not evidence that Firefox stopped working on every computer. The linked notes identify which version contains each change, keeping the redesign distinct from its fixes.[2]
