Herdling: guiding a herd safely into the mountains

A journey changes when you are not alone. Okomotive proposes travelling with fantastical animals, caring for them and crossing a landscape that can also put them in danger.

The path matters because of who comes with you

In Herdling, the mountain is more than a point to reach: it is the destination of a herd that depends on you. Calicorns are large, horned creatures you must guide and protect on an alpine expedition. The official presentation places the route among misty forests, snowy plateaus and valleys. The image has something of a storybook about it, but its meaning changes when you think about the group: moving forward is not just about finding your own footing, but helping your companions follow as well.[1]

Caring instead of conquering

Okomotive, the studio behind FAR, and publisher Panic describe a wordless adventure about trust, survival and companionship. That starting point invites you to see the animals as travelling companions rather than a resource to collect. If the scenery first catches your attention, Herdling's question follows afterwards: what does crossing it mean when someone is in your care? It is a different way of approaching a journey. The distance travelled matters, but so does the relationship with those who travel alongside you.[2]

Peacefulness does not remove danger

The press material announces obstacles, threats and light environmental puzzles. Its appearance should therefore not be mistaken for a promise of an entirely safe stroll. Looking ahead, deciding where to move the group or stopping at a difficult crossing are questions that fit its premise of care. Tension does not need to turn every encounter into a battle to make sense: the herd's fate can be enough. We will not reveal the ending; the point here is to understand the kind of journey being offered.[3]

A guided journey, not an open world

Andy Chalk, who reviewed it for PC Gamer on 27 August 2025, describes a very linear route and shallow gameplay, outweighed for him by the landscape's impact. He also notes that animals can be injured or killed by environmental hazards and predators. That is his experience, not our playthrough. It helps set expectations: Herdling proposes accompanying a herd along a designed route rather than freely roaming an enormous world. His assessment lets us appreciate the visual appeal without turning it into a promise of mechanical complexity.[4]

What to look at before joining the herd

The launch trailer, linked by the creators in their press material, is a useful first stop: notice how the group moves and the contrast between their bodies and the mountain's size. The official listing dates release to 21 August 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. We are returning to it as a discovery, not presenting it as this week's new release. If accompanying and observing appeal to you, the premise has a clear direction; if you want constant decisions or open exploration, keep the earlier critical perspective in mind.[3][4]
