FreeCAD: change a dimension without drawing the whole part again
Parametric modelling preserves decisions you can revisit. We explain what that means for a measured sketch and why a file is not the same as a manufactured part.
When the drawing needs a correction
Imagine designing a part and discovering that one dimension needs to change. FreeCAD’s approach preserves history and parameters you can revisit rather than treating the design as a finished image. The project presents itself as an open-source 3D modeller for real-world objects. Its appeal is expressing a decision through a dimension and returning to it when requirements change.[1]
The sketch has rules
The tools page describes a 2D sketcher with geometric constraints. A constraint is a condition a drawing must satisfy: it defines geometry rather than relying only on its appearance on screen. The project uses these sketches as foundations for building other objects. For a beginner, the essential distinction is considering which relationships a part must preserve, not simply whether its outline looks right.[2]
Changing a parameter is not a universal promise
FreeCAD explains that properties can depend on values or other objects and changes are recalculated on demand. When changing a dimension, check what depended on it. A design with contradictory relationships does not become coherent merely by pressing a button. That check gives history a purpose beyond remembering your work: understanding which decision you want to correct.[2]
The model and the part are different things
The website advertises interchange through formats such as STEP and STL, alongside tools for 3D printing and other work. Those are software capabilities; they do not prove that a particular part will fit or withstand a load. If manufacturing is your goal, define its purpose and what you must check in the physical result. A digital model helps prepare that work but cannot replace it.[1]
An update relevant to sharing files
The project’s record dates FreeCAD 1.1.4 to 28 September 2026. Its notes identify security fixes when opening crafted FCStd files and recommend updating, especially when opening files from unknown sources. That is the developer’s recommendation, not a test performed by this newspaper. When starting with someone else’s designs, considering their origin and your installed version is part of the work before focusing on changing dimensions.[3]
