Mistral Large 4 has a preview: open weights would come later
The new French AI has two stages: service access and a future file release. What changes for people who want to use it and those who want to run it themselves.
The European development has two dates
Mistral opened a public Large 4 preview through its API on 6 October. Weights are announced for late this month. That is the important distinction: using a company-hosted model and obtaining files to run it are different forms of access. The French offering is interesting particularly for that second stage, which remains planned.[1]
It goes beyond reading text
The documentation describes text and image inputs and a one-million-token context window. That window indicates how much material a conversation can take, not that every answer will be correct. To understand its usefulness, imagine a question about a document accompanied by images: relating both, retaining details and recognising what is not visible would matter.[2]
Appearing on OpenRouter does not deliver the files
The public catalogue checked on 13 October includes mistralai/mistral-large-4-0. Mistral’s changelog still describes weights as coming soon. Neither observation amounts to verifying a download: once released, the files, licence and required resources will need checking. Open weights and open-source software are not interchangeable labels either.[3][4]
European news without declaring a comparison won
Euronews covered the 6 October presentation and reported company claims. That coverage helps follow the announcement; we do not use it as a performance test. Model comparisons need to identify who measured, which tasks they used and under what conditions. One good demonstration answer is insufficient to decide which will work better with your documents or questions.[5]
What running it yourself would change
Having files would allow a self-managed installation to be considered, subject to the licence and necessary hardware. It does not automatically turn a model into an application for every laptop. That is the useful question for the next announcement: what can actually be downloaded and where it makes sense to run it. Today’s story is the preview; the weight release deserves its own check when it arrives.
